Since I´ve had the opportunity to read a lot and borrow books from the huge Peace Corps volunteer network, I´d thought I´d start a post of good books I´ve read and recommend. My latest includes: Acts of Faith by Philip Capulo Read it! It´s good. A convergance of characters in wartime Sudan-missionaries, mercenarys, aid workers, country nationals.
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides Fictional novel about an interesting character, to say the least, that looks back 3 generations on her greek immigrant family to understand why she is who she is. The author has a captivating, detailed, and interesting style of writing that keeps you enthralled. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini A novel, but an interesting look at Afghanistan and the life and politics there over the last 3 decades. Really interesting and I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to know a little bit more about the Taliban and life in Afghanistan
A Farewell to Arms by Hernest Hemingway A classic...simple but intriguing.
The Last True Story I'll Ever Tell by Chris O'Donnell A true story about a guardsmen's experience in Iraq. His explicit descriptions of life as a soldier in Iraq gives a very real and true experience of what a lot of these guys are going through there.
Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson A good glimpse into how one man´s work can create peace and also some reasoning behind the Taliban and Al-Queda´s growth. The Things We Carried by Tim O´Brien A simple, but interesting story about life in the Vietnam War as a foot soldier. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The Ugly American A book I think all Americans should read about the American presence overseas working as a diplomat versus as a "layman". Written during the '60s, it's an interesting look at how simple actions can make significant changes and how big government actions can make little or destructive change.
Water for Elephants This book, sent to me recently in a care package from Stephanie :), is a fun and captivating novel about life and the drama of a vet working for a circus in depression era 1920's.
